Vodafone announces Webbox, gives internet access to the developing world

While many of us are focused on the latest and greatest consumer tech, there are many parts of the globe still waiting for utilities we take for granted -- like electricity, running water, and access to the internet. Developing nations do have access to cellphones, however. Vodafone is keenly aware of this fact, and its latest product, the Webbox, will bring the internet to anyone with a TV and access to 2.5G or EDGE networks. The Webbox is essentially a QWERTY keyboard -- with the data hardware from a phone stuffed inside -- that connects to a TV through basic RCA cables and allows for a relatively speedy internet experience by compressing data by around 90 percent. It's dead simple to set up, as you simply plug in the RCA's and switch on the device -- an Opera Mini browser pops up on screen and allows users to start surfing the world wide web immediately. An app store, some games, and a text editor are baked into the portal, and the ability to send email and SMS messages is included is well. Vodafone is selling the device -- which comes with a 2GB SD card and 100MB of data -- in South Africa for 749 Rand ($102), with other markets and a two year contract plan to be added later this year. Sierra Wireless AirCard 753S and AirCard 754S 4G Mobile Hotspots

Sierra Wireless announced to new 4G mobile hotspots, the AirCard 753S for Dual Carrier HSPA+ and the AirCard 754S for LTE network. At about the size of a deck of cards, both AirCard hotspots are lightweight and come with an LCD display to provide all the necessary information, including WiFi access information, battery life, network signal strength, and the number of devices connected. They also offer audible alerts and an intuitive web interface.

The AirCard 753S supports downlink speeds of up to 42 Mbps (megabits per second) and uplink speeds of up to 5.76 Mbps on a DC-HSPA+ network while the AirCard 754S offers downlink speeds of up to 100 Mbps and uplink speeds of up to 50 Mbps when operating on an LTE network. They can share 4G connection to up to five WiFi devices. These hotspots also supports 3G UMTS and 2G EDGE networks and will switch 2G/3G when 4G network coverage is not available. In fact, the AirCard 754S also support HSPA+ network.

LG Optimus 3D Android Smartphone Officially Announced

LG officially announced the Optimus 3D P920 Android smartphone powered by “tri-dual” configuration – dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory. The 3D phone is boosted by TI OMAP4 dual core 1GHz processor, and 4Gb LP DDR2 memory. It comes with 8GB internal memory.

The Optimus 3D features dual 5 Megapixel lens camera that can record 1080p Full HD 2D video or 720p HD 3D video. The phone also supports 720p and 1080p video playback of H.264, H.263, DivX, MKV, WMV-9, ASF, AVI, 3GP, MP4 formats. The Optimus 3D has a 4.3-inch large 3D touchscreen and offers HDMI 1.3 output and DLNA support. LG has partnered with YouTube allowing users to upload and stream 3D content and share each other’s creations on YouTube’s dedicated 3D channel (youtube.com/3D).

Samsung Galaxy S II and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab II confirmed for MWC, 4-inch 3D display, LTE-based cloud gaming coming later

Alright, we've just laid eyes on some internal Samsung documents and can bring you the official names and specs of the successors to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab. Firstly, the Galaxy S II will tout a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1GHz dual-core Orion / Exynos processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3.0, and 24Mbps HSPA+ connectivity. All those stats were leaked earlier this morning, along with the image above, and we've once again seen the 8.49mm thickness for this device, although we now believe it is the measurement at its thinnest point -- it's likely that the S II will fatten up to 9.9mm, presumably to accommodate the camera module, one of the last remaining parts of smartphone construction that require extra girth (NFC being another).

As to the Galaxy Tab II, it is indeed the 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet we've been hearing so much about, with the added bonus of it being a Google Experience Device. That should mean no Samsung-derived skin customizations atop the stock Android 3.0 UI -- exactly what we expect to see from the Motorola Xoom. Also matching the Xoom are the resolution, at 1280 x 800, and CPU speed, at 1GHz, though we couldn't determine whether the Tab II will be a dual- or single-core tablet. Our money's on seeing the Exynos 4210 appear in both new Galaxy devices, but we'll have to wait until Samsung's presser tomorrow to find out for sure. One more note of import on specs: we saw a 16GB / 32GB / 64GB storage listing, but couldn't be sure what product it referred to -- wouldn't it be lovely if the Galaxy S II was the first smartphone to step past the 60GB barrier?

Finally, looking toward the future, Samsung is apparently working on a 4-inch WVGA display with 3D capabilities -- presumably autostereoscopic like LG's Optimus 3D -- and an intriguing "Motion UI" control scheme. The latter will allow you to pan inside Google Maps and StreetView just by the movement of your phone, as well as zoom in and out of pages by tilting the handset up and down (a gyroscope will be required for both functions). Samsung also has big plans for LTE, with a focus on pumping out whatever you receive over the 4G connection to a nearby HDTV using dual display technology. The two applications we caught sight of were personal broadcasting, where your Sammy handset would act as an extremely sophisticated internet TV receiver, and cloud-based gaming. Here's hoping we learn more about these future ventures tomorrow.

LG Triptych: Phone Morphs Into Tablet Concept Design

Designer, Edward Hale, recently shared some images of an LG concept phone called the Triptych that can morph into a tablet. This sounds familiar harking back to Sprint and Kyocera’s joint announcement of the Echo dual-touchscreen phone/tablet earlier this week. But those two sure could take a lesson from Hale’s design. The Triptych makes the Echo look very very sad. Luckily for them, LG is still busy pushing their first tablet the G-Slate. More images after the cut.

The Triptych concept design shows a very slim-bodied phone featuring one phone screen and two additional screens that fold out from behind to form the tablet screen. Imagine how awesome it would be if they used AMOLED technology for this.

It’s also interesting to think about what OS it would use since it can switch back and forth between phone and tablet. Perhaps it can dual booth phone and tablet operating systems.

Hitachi 4.5-inch 1280×720 IPS LCD Panel

Hitachi announced a 4.5-inch IPS LCD panel with a 1280×720 HD resolution. The panel can display 16.7 million colors and features 500cd/m2 brightness with LED-backlight, 1100:1 contrast ratio, 160/160-degree viewing angle and 329ppi density, matching 326ppi on iPhone 4′s Retina Display.

Hitach’s new 4.5-inch HD IPS panel will be showcased at the SID 2011.

Acer reveal 3D-ready P5403 projector

Acer has just announced details of a new 3D-ready projector, the P5403.

3D-Ready DLP technology is used to convert the flat surface of the project on a screen in 3D, make a frame rate of 120 Hz for smooth motion, and 3D images.

Convenient to lay the pictures on the walls 300 inches in size, is the 3,500 ANSI lumens and evaluated native SXGA + (1400 x 1050) Maximum UXGA (1600 x 1200) WSXGA + (1680 x 1050) resolution mode.

HDMI, composite, analog and S-video connections available, guaranteed with a contrast ratio of 3000:1 relatively deep black during video playback. Two 5-watt internal speakers do not have to lug around a separate audio output for the projector, if you plan on traveling with him for presentations and film screenings with your friends.
